Nigeria and Biafra: My
Story is a
rich book about the first ten years of Nigeria as an independent country,
presenting the terrible experience of that turbulent period as a learning
tool that can help to create a better future. The author XE "The author
(Philip Efiong)" , the late Obong Philip Efiong XE "Efiong, Philip" ,
a senior military officer during this era and later a chief, witnessed the
events leading to the civil war, notably the coups of 1966 and the
declaration of secession by the government of Eastern Nigeria. Obong
Efiong moved from Lagos to Enugu XE "Enugu" in 1967, as part of an
unfolding crisis. He was later to become one of the officers who had to
defend the newly created country of Biafra. The bitter war lasted for
thirty months, with our author acquiring the remarkable destiny of signing
the Surrender Instrument XE "Surrender Instrument" on January 15, 1970.

Reviews & Comments:
-
It is often said that war
is a tale told by the winners. While there is precedent for such a claim,
for example in the annals of Roman history, the new book by Obong Philip
Efiong entitled "Nigeria and Biafra: My Story" merits a category all its
own. Part autobiography and part history of the years leading up to and
comprising one of the bloodiest civil wars in recent history, Efiong has
created a work which combines the political insight of a Machiavelli with
the moral heroism of other great leaders who have occupied the stage of
African politics during the birth pangs of the post-colonial era. It is the
story of an insider who can yet don the hat of the political philosopher and
look at events experienced at first hand from a distance which allows for
penetrating analysis. This is a must read for anyone who wants to truly
comprehend the saga and the sorrow of Nigeria. In order for Nigeria to
survive and prosper in the future its people must learn the lessons of its
past. Efiong has provided us all with a resource of great worth befitting
the beloved country whose recent history he did so much to help forge.
